Scientists have come to understand that a fish’s
ability to migrate - to move upstream and downstream in response to
changing conditions - often determines its ability to survive.
When
river systems are intact, fish swim away from disturbances like flood,
fire and drought. But when dams, diversions and dried up streambeds
block the escape routes and isolate fish in small stream reaches,
trouble ensues.
Trout Unlimited Connecticut works through its
Eastern Water Project and in coordination with state agencies, such as
the Department of Environmental Protection, to remove dams, build fish
ladders allowing upstream migration and preserve water supplies,
increasing river flows and keeping water instream for fish.
Our
partnerships with other organizations throughout the state forms a
coalition of conservationists committed to ensuring plentiful, cool,
clean water in our rivers and streams.
